‘Storytelling’ Exhibition

Opening 11 April 2018

Ponsonby Central, Auckland

We are excited to present a new body of work that focuses on the nature of movement at an elemental level. In this show, Jones blends together landscapes that ambiguously fall across the canvas and create narratives of their own. The constantly changing surface encourages an individual journey. As do the intricate details which unravel into larger forms, providing the opportunity to observe the work from up close or a far.

“The medium itself is an inspiration of its own; using surface tension I am able to create intriguing movements that take you on a journey. The paint tells its own story and the movements unfold with expanding gestural marks that blend one into the next. The idea of storytelling without words excites me and it opens up a new language within the paint. Small worlds create shapes that form the overall piece. Unfolding, they become the chapters in each artwork’s story.”

Each piece captivates the audience through the drama within the paint layers. Opaque acrylic is fused with pigmented polymer; at the point of contact they oppose each other (surface tension), and in turn cause the controlled reaction of the two mediums. The application of transparent tints, blanket the surface like a subtle river of colour.

There is an engaging open-ended narrative in Jones’s paintings that allows the viewer to be suspended in a dreamlike reality. No defined answers are offered, only the encouragement to enter a world within the piece and explore it with your own sensibility. In essence, much of the work is a plateau for personal exploration. The enticing yet muted tones draw you into a tactile surface, guiding the observer whilst encouraging them to fill in the blanks with their own interpretation.
